Hi Everybody!!

Yesterday one of the classes (Department of Tourism) of Manteo Zubiri made a trip to the countryside and I was invited to join them. After 1 ½ hours driving we reached Arantzazu with the impressive “Santuario de Arantzazu”.

The most spectacular of this place is the temple. It does not seem like a church, neither in nor outside. The exterior is covered with carved stones and formed like a pyramid. Inside there were no pictures, not like in a normal church which is full of saints and virgins. There was only a cruzifix on the altar and the figure of the virgin. The church is very large and does not meet the normal patterns of churches.

After taking a few photos we went by bus towards to Azpeitia where we visited the birthplace of Ignacio de Loyola. Some facts: Born in 1491 in Loyala. His life was among royal court and the military, then he converted and studied technology in Paris where he later found the “Compañia de Jesus” (= an order of the catholic Church, founded in Paris approved by Pope Paul II. With nearly 19,000 members, priests, students and siblings it is this the biggest Catholic male religious order today). He died in Rome in 1556.

After a short break we went in to see “El Santuario y la Basilica de Loyola”. It is a monumental and religious complex constructed around the birthplace of Ignatius of Loyola. It is located in the disctrict of Loyola in the municipality of Azpeitia Guipuzcoa.
